3 die after bamboo jetty collapses in West Bengal

The death toll in the collapse of a temporary jetty over West Bengal's Hooghly river has increased to 12, officials said on Friday. Reportedly, the temporary bridge at the jetty was very weak and it broke down as more people stood on it during the day.

According to locals, some people survived by swimming towards the bank at their own, while others were helped by police and people that had gathered after the incident. Further details are awaited.

Rescue workers recovered three bodies from the water on Wednesday and three more on Thursday while seven other were rescued alive and sent to a nearby hospital. The local administration arrested four people, who were given out lease of the jetty.

Following the meeting, Principal Secretary of state's transport department, Alapan Banerjee, told IBNS: "After discussing the accident in Hooghly river and the health of jetties in the state with our District Magistrates, we have taken few decisions today". During the meeting, 16,000 small boats have also been identified, which are running illegally across the state.

Search operation being carried out after a jetty collapsedat Bhadreswar in West Bengal on Wednesday. The bodies were recovered from Jagaddal, Chandannagar and Shyamnagar.
