The death toll in the collapse of a temporary jetty over West Bengal's Hooghly river has increased to 12, officials said on Friday. Reportedly, the temporary bridge at the jetty was very weak and it broke down as more people stood on it during the day.

According to locals, some people survived by swimming towards the bank at their own, while others were helped by police and people that had gathered after the incident. Further details are awaited.

Rescue workers recovered three bodies from the water on Wednesday and three more on Thursday while seven other were rescued alive and sent to a nearby hospital. The local administration arrested four people, who were given out lease of the jetty.
