The President's comments come after a warning from American Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that military action by the U.S. will be "on the table" if North Korea elevates its threat level.
A report on the Korea Herald news site said that the U.S. secretary of state had "shortened diplomatic consultations and public events in Seoul" and chosen not to have a meal with Hwang Kyo-ahn, the South Korean acting president, and Yun Byung-se, the country's foreign minister.
There was no immediate reaction from North Korea but the country's top newspaper Rodong Sinmun carried a commentary Saturday threatening to launch a devastating nuclear attack if the USA takes military action.
It wasn't clear whether Tillerson and Xi discussed North Korea's missile and nuclear activities, which have strained relations between the two powers.
And Mr Tillerson says there is no need for China to punish South Korea for deploying an advanced United States anti-missile system aimed at defending itself against the North.
He said Wang and he agreed to work together to persuade North Korea "make a course correction and move away from the development of their nuclear weapons".

North Korea conducted its first nuclear test in 2006. They have been playing the United States for years.

On the campaign trail a year ago, candidate Donald Trump pilloried China as a security threat and, particularly, a stealer of American jobs. "It is looking for more balanced trade ties and greater Chinese contribution to peace and stability, especially in dealing with North Korea", Glaser said.
"We've seen flickers of cooperation between the USA and China but no firm agreement on how to deal with North Korea". Bringing North Korea "to a different place" is a matter to be approached with "a sense of urgency", he said.
"In return, North Korea has detonated nuclear weapons and launched ballistic missiles".
Tillerson is also in Beijing to iron out the details of a tentative Florida summit in April between Trump and China's President.
